Handspun flax + crocheted items • "way over 100 yrs old"
I love finding items with provenance notes! We should all date and describe our treasures for future generations to find. (Flax = linen, by the way!)
Unfortunately "way over 100 yrs old" only tells us the flax is at least 100 years old, but allegedly older. Without some idea of when the note was written, it's difficult to tell. However, I would guess the last owner jotted the note sometime in the last 20 years, so this fiber possibly dates to the 1880s or 1890s. Maybe earlier.
The crocheted items are a complete mystery. Perhaps their creation was contemporary with the spinning of the flax. Perhaps they were crocheted much later.
The larger piece appears finished but is unblocked. It measures 16" x 16" and you can see subtle variegations in the linen thread. The other piece is unfinished but measures 11" x 7". The large ball of thread is about the size of a large lemon.

What you're getting here. I'm selling items from my own collection and items I do not have room for. I'm not a dealer so things are not always exquisitely curated. Textiles are sold as-is, so please give me a shout if you have questions. There are probably stains. There are probably holes and rips. I've done my best to show this in pictures and/or video. The same applies to non-textile antique/vintage goods. Unless otherwise noted, I don't launder items, or repair them. That's on you.
Many old textiles are delicate, but some articles of clothing are in solid enough condition to be worn. Others are compromised in some way but wonderful nonetheless. They are excellent for studying, making a pattern tracing for reproduction, for use in textile conservation (calling all crazy quilt lovers!), or repurposing into art. Ann Wood makes great use of old, tattered antique clothing in her wonderful stitched dolls and objects.
Shipping. I carefully pack items but do my best to minimize excessive shipping and packing materials. That said, postage is pretty crazy these days. Shopify also throws up some barriers to easily combining shipping for the kinds of stuff I'm selling. If you wish to purchase more than one item, but the shopping cart appears to be giving you an astronomical rate, please reach out via the Contact Form and I can assist. A word about pricing. I'm not trying to make a million dollars. I'm just looking to support my textile work and save some lovely, old things from the landfill. I've priced things according to my research but I'm not a dealer nor appraiser. You may be getting an amazing deal. You may be paying full retail. But you know what? I'm happy to haggle.
